What is metamerization? What are the advantages of metamerization?
Mesmerisation: is also called segmentation and it is the condition in which body of an organism is divided into a linear series of repeating parts called metameres/somites. Mesmerisation observed in both plant & animals and in animals it is originated from the mesoderm & ectoderm. In animals, two types of metamerism are observed homonymous metamery & heteronomous metamery. In homonymous metamery, each segment acts independently and perform specific function e.g. Annelids but in a heteronomous metamery group of metamers associate and perform particular body function e.g. insects. In vascular plants, a metameric pattern observed in the shoot & embryo. It is believed that it is originated by the recurring asexual reproduction in lower organisms like flatworm like animals
Advantages: it decreases the severe effects caused by the body injury. When there is damage in organs of one segment still body works with hundred percent efficiency because of the presence of same organs in other segments.
Loss of reproductive cells containing segments does not destroy the organism. The loss of such segments does not affect the organism because it again reproduces with the help of reproductive cells in other segments.
It also helps in predation and locomotory abilities of an organism
