Hello,
I was wondering what are other methods to perform a limonene
extractions from orange peels and mint leaves rather than the steam
and soxhlet extractions? thank you
Limonene is a high-boiling liquid which decomposes under the high heat needed to bring it to a boil. So, steam distillation is a much gentler way to obtain it.
Other methods of extractions are:
1. Cold pressing: This method is used to obtain citrus fruits oils. The fruits are rolled over a trough with sharp projections that penetrate the peels, this pierce the tiny pouches containing the essential oil. The whole fruit is pressed to squeeze the juice.
2. Microwave assisted process(MAP): This process uses microwave to excite water molecules in plant tissue causing the cells to rupture and release the essential oil trapped in the extra cellular tissue of the plants. A good yield is obtained by this method and also it reduces the time of extraction.
3. Hydrodiffusion: In this method, steam at atmospheric pressure is passed through the plant material from the top of the extraction chamber. The oils obtained by this method retain the original aroma of the plants.
4. Hydrodistillation: The technique involves distillation of water that is in direct contact with fresh or sometimes dried macerated plant materials . Plant material is grinded and heated in two to three times its weight of water with direct steam.
5. Supercritical fluid CO2 extraction is the another method that can be used for extraction.
