What is minocycline and its mechanism of action? What is TetM and to what does it confer resistance? Is TetM found in any mycoplasmas? Can TetM spread by Horizontal Gene Transfer?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Minocycline is in a class of medications called tetracycline antibiotics. It works to treat infections by preventing the growth and spread of bacteria. It works to treat acne by killing the bacteria that infects pores and decreasing a certain natural oily substance that causes acne.

A tetracycline analog, having a 7-dimethylamino and lacking the 5 methyl and hydroxyl groups, which is effective against tetracycline-resistant staphylococcus infections.

MECHANISM- Minocycline passes directly through the lipid bilayer or passively diffuses through porin channels in the bacterial membrane. Minocycline bind to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing the binding of tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex and interfering with protein synthesis.

TetM-Tetracycline resistance protein or Ribosomal protection protein, which protects ribosome from the translation inhibition of tetracycline .TetM mediates the release of tetracycline from the ribosome in a GTP dependent manner

no tetm is not found in mycoplasma

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is the movement of genetic information between organisms, a process that includes the spread of antibiotic resistance genes among bacteria (except for those from parent to offspring),

tet genes are widely found in pathogenic bacteria and spread easily by horizontal gene transfe
