risperidone the mechanism of action
The answer for above question:
MECHANISM OF ACTION: ( RISPERIDONE)
Risperidone is the second generation group of anti psychotic drug which has the affinity for D2 , alpha 1, alpha 2 , 5 - HT2A and also H1 receptors. The mechanism of action of the drug is not clearly understood but the concepts are mainly focused on the ability of the drug which block D2 and 5-HT2A receptors.
The receptors dopaminergic are transiently inhibited by risperidone which reduce the dopaminergic neurotransmission , it involves in decreasing the positive symptoms of the disease schizophrenia. The action of risperidone starts by binding transiently and loose with affinity to the receptor of D2. Rapid dissociation of drug risperidone from D2 receptors contributes and decrease the risk of extra pyramidal symptoms. Low effects of affinity binding and rapid dissociation from the receptors will clearly distinguish the drug risperidone from the traditional act of the anti psychotic drugs.
The high affinity binding with 5- HT2A will leads to the decrease of serotonergic activity. Risperidone also has an effect of antagonist against the alpha 1 and 2 , histamine receptors. The clear and exact mechanism of risperidone is unknown but it act by mediating through the receptor antagonism.
