List all the ways one could increase caloric expenditure (read: energy demand) during exercise and then explain, biologically, why energy demand is higher

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ways to increase caloric expenditure during exercise.

Part 1

1. Make every rep count

it is not necessary to do more rep to increase caloric expenditure in workout , but proper exercise during and nice movement will bring a change.

2. Adding extra weight.

Adding some resistance in form of weights to your workout can help you increase oxygen demand ,hence caloric expenditure is maximized. Adding proper weight can help you burn calories ,even hours after exercise.

3. polymetric exercise

polymetric exercise like star jumps , burpees, plyo lunges fire up your type II muscle filbres, you end up increasing caloric expenditure.

4. Work with inclines and declines

whether you are working out on a an exercise machine or with your own body weight, challenging your center of gravity with inclines and declines can challenge your stability and balance muscles, while improving your calorie burn . " Adding incline to anything bumps up your heart rate, which expends calories at higher rates."

Part 2

Caloric expenditure can be measured directly which requires the measurement of the heat released by the body or indirectly be measuring ventilation and exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide by the body.

At rest, your body expend energy to maintain the functions of the cells that are essential for life . he continual pumping of blood by the heart demand energy, as does the continual ventilation of the lungs.

ATP is the main molecule of the body uses as means to use chemical energy to perform cellular work. Exercise adds to the caloric expenditure of the body has the muscle contraction involves the need to repeatedly form and breakdown ATP. The energy release from breakdown of ATP fuels the contraction of skeletal muscle , thereby adding to the energy demand of the body and raising caloric expenditure. Research has shown that during exercise the increase in caloric expenditure is almost in totally due to contraction of skeletal muscle . The balance is due to increase in energy demands of the heart and the muscles during ventilation.

Hence calorie expenditure increase during exercise.

During exercise, blood flow to skeletal muscles must increase to meet the increase in oxygen demand for ATP (energy) production. The initial response that increases blood flow to the muscle cells is automatic and independent of the nervous and endocrine systems. Which type of homeostatic regulation is this? Explain.
