a. It stimulates reabsorption of water
b. It is not secreted if the body consumes large amounts of water
c. It is secreted if the body fluids become hypertonic
d. It is produced by the distal tubule
e. It is also called vasopressin
Select the incorrect statement about ADH. Select one:
Answer: d. It is produced by distal tubule.
Explanation: ADH (antidiuretic hormone) also known as vasopressin is not produced by distal tubule. It is produced by hypothalamus and released by posterior pituitary gland where it is temporarily stored before being released into the blood stream in response to increased osmolarity of blood. It acts on the distal tubule and increases the reabsorption of water from the distal tubule back into the circulation. If the extracellular fluid in the body becomes hypertonic, it acts as a stimulus for ADH secretion which reabsorbs water from the distal tubule and brings the osmolarity of extracellular fluid back to normal. If an individual consumes large amount of water, there is no deficiency of water in the body so the secretion of ADH is reduced as the body does not need more reabsorption of water. ADH is also called vasopressin as it constricts the arterioles and thereby helps in raising the blood pressure by increasing the peripheral vascular resistance.
