  1. Humans and other living organisms also tend to develop resistance against drugs. However, generally it takes years and sometime decades before that happens. (4 points)
    1. Give at least two reasons why microbes develop drug resistance so rapidly. Please explain clearly.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Yes humans and other higher organisms takes several years for drug resistance as the mutation rate of these organisms is very slow. And posess several repair mechanisms and also due to the presence of introns(non coding). The mutation at introns do not cause any changes in proteins.

But microbes such as bacteria develop drug resistance rapidly due to the following reasons.

1. Bacteria divides so fast that is for 20 minutes one cell divides into two. Due to this rapid division mutation rate is high. More mutations leads to the adaptation towards drugs results in drug resistance.

2. Generally bacteria donot contain introns. So mutations more likely takesplace in coding regions due to chemical and physical damages.

3. Bacteria donot contain advanced repair mechanisms. This is also a reason for mutations which finally leads to drug resistance.

Due to Mutations , lack of perfect repair mechanisms and fast division bacteria become drug resistance more rapidly.

discussed that all living organisms have seven properties in common: (1) they grow and develop, (2) interact/respond to the environment, (3) reproduce, (4) process energy, (5) self-regulate, (6) are ordered/organized, and (7) evolve/adapt. Viruses, however, represent a challenge to this because they do not self regulate or process energy, which has led to many scientists not classifying viruses as living and say they are simply particles. Based on what you know from, should viruses be considered living? There is no...

Humans and many other organisms are diploid, possessing two sets of genes, one from the mother and the other from the father. However, a number of eukaryotic organisms spend most of their life cycles in a haploid state. Ex. Neurospora undergoes meiosis and sexual reproduction, but most of the cells comprising Neurospora are haploid. Considering that haploid organisms are fully capable of sexual reproduction and generating genetic variation, why are most complex eukaryotes diploid? What might be the evolutionary advantage...

Fruit flies, like almost all other living organisms, have built-in circadian rhythms that keep time even in the absence of external stimuli. Several genes have been shown to be involved in internal timekeeping, including per (period) and tim (timeless). Mutations in these two genes, and in other genes, disrupt timekeeping abilities. Interestingly, these genes have also been shown to be involved in other time-related behavior, such as the frequency of wingbeats in male courtship behaviors. Individuals that carry particular mutations...
