Which of the following reflexes speeds-up (enhances) the movement of material along the GI tract? (in the direction of the rectum or “downstream”)
Group of answer choices
A. Gastroileal reflex
B. Gastrocolic reflex
C. Enterogastric reflex
A and B
A, B, and C
Gastroileal reflex is one of the gastrointestinal reflex where
the presence of food in stomach and gastric peristalsis causes
reflex opening of ileocecal valve resulting in emptying of contents
of ileum into the large intestine. Once the food reaches large
intestine, it causes contraction in large intestine resulting in
urge to defecate.
Gastrocolic reflex is stimulated in response to presence of food in
stomach and small intestine. It causes increase in mass movement of
the food in large intestine resulting in urge to defecate.
enterogastric reflex is stimulated through acidic ph of stomach and
duodenum and duodenal distension. This results in reflex inhibition
of gastrin cells of stomach producing acid and gastric
motility.
Thus gastroileal and gastrocolic reflex increases the gut motility
and this enhances movement of material along the GIT.
Enterogastric reflex causes inhibition of gut motility.
So the answer is A and B
