What do you Think? If he were alive during President Obama’s term, what do you think DuBois would say about racial inequality in the twenty-first century? How would you say racial equality has continued to grow during President Trump’s first year in office? How much do you think African Americans today experience a “double consciousness?” In what ways can sociology help us understand and reduce racial conflict?
Du Bois was the first African American to earn a doctorate. He was a sociologists, historian, civil rights activists who was also part of the Niagara Movement which fought for the equal rights of the African Americans. Du Bois always advocated that if African Americans are given enough opportunity they will excel in any field.
If he were alive in the time of Obama, he would have appreciated the white society and see his dream coming true. Given the opportunity, anyone will excel. He would have appreciated the great change that has come in the American society.
During Trump’s period this spirit and oneness seems to be in the decreasing trend. His racial remarks and hate speeches has landed a blow on equality. He is alright in putting forth the rights of Americans but he has forgotten that all the races that live in harmony have made the America that he sees today.
Although few incidents show that African Americans face discrimination even today from the white officials, they have earned most of their rights and integrated in the American society as one. They are part of the popular culture which the majority follows, so, double consciousness is not applicable today as it was a century ago or even fifty years ago.
