Question 5: Data on the total tobacco exposure time (in seconds) for G-rated animated films with tobacco use released between 1937 and 1997 produced by Walt Disney, Inc. are as follows:

223 176 548 37 158 51 299 37 11 165 74 92 6 23 206 9

Similar data for G-rated animated films with tobacco use produced by MGM/United Artists, Warner Brothers, Universal, and Twentieth Century Fox are as follows:

205 162 6 1 117 5 91 155 24 55 17

(a) . Construct a back-to-back stem-and-leaf plot to compare the two exposure-time distributions. Use hundreds for stems and tens (truncated) for leaves. Divide each stem into a ”Low” and ”High” part.

(b) . Compare the two exposure-time distributions with respect to shape, centre, spread and outliers

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) A Stem and Leaf Plot is a special table where each data value is split into a "stem" (hundreds) and a "leaf" (tens). For example, in 176, stem would be 1 and leaf would be 6. Ignore last digit.

Write wach stem value twice. Write 0 to 4 leaves in "Low" part and 5 to 9 leaves in "High" part. A back-to-back stem-and-leaf plot to compare the two exposure-time distributions is shown below:

b) Both exposure-time distributions are skewed to the right. The MGA/United's exposure-time distribution does not have any outlier while Walt disney's exposure-time distribution has an outlier at 548. The median time for MGA/United's exposure-time is 55 seconds while for Walt disney's exposure-time is 83 seconds. The exposure-time distribution for Walt disney is more spreadout than MGA/United's exposure-time distribution.

You are provided with some weight of specimen data as a function of time following exposure of an alloy specimen to oxygen at high temperature. (i) Determine whether or not the alloy follows a particular oxidation rate law during the initial one hour period; if so, specify which one and determine the oxidation rate constant. (ii) Is there any change in the oxidation rate law in the following 20 hour period? If so, specify the new law and estimate the...
