QUESTION 1

How long? How much time in seconds does it take for the sled to go down part of a hill?

A sled with a total mass of 671 kilograms is going down a straight part of a hill where the angle of incline is 10.6 degrees.

The length of the straight part of the hill is 76.4 metres.

The speed of the sled at the top of the hill is 4 meters per second.

The combined forces of friction = the total friction including air drag and sliding friction = 43 newtons.

How much time does it take for the sled to travel down the straight part of the hill?

Note that the initial speed is NOT zero and so you will have to solve a quadratic equation to get your answer.

Solutions

Expert Solution

To calculate the time taken by the sled to travel the straight portion of the hill, we have to know to force acting on the sled in X and Y direction. Then using equation of kinematics we find the quadratic equation of t and solving this equation we can find time.

Does reaction time (measured in seconds) depend on how much coffee is consumed? Researchers design an experiment in which subjects are instructed to look at a computer screen and respond as quickly as possible—by pressing a button—as soon as a particular stimulus appears on the computer screen. Prior to responding to the computer stimulus, subjects are either randomly assigned to drink no coffee, to drink one cup of coffee, or to drink two cups of coffee. It is observed that...

One of the goals of one study was to estimate the response time of ambulances using warning lights (Ho & Lindquist, 2001). They timed a total of 67 runs in a small rural county in Minnesota. They calculated the mean response time to be 8.51 minutes, with a standard deviation of 6.64 minutes. Calculate a 95% confidence interval for the mean for this...
