CH3COOH + C5H12O --> C7H14O2 +H2O

A. Calculate the mass of isopentyl acetate (in g) that will be formed when 358g of acetic acid react with 475g of isopentyl alcohol.

B. What mass of isopentyl acetate is produced if the yield is 65.5%?

please solve with dimensional analysis.

Solutions

Expert Solution

A)

number of mole = (given mass)/(molar mass)
molar mass of CH3COOH = 60 g/mol
number of mole CH3COOH = 358/60
= 6.0 mole
molar mass of C5H12O = 88 g/mol
number of mole C5H12O = 475/88
= 5.4 mole

reaction taking place is
CH3COOH + C5H12O --> C7H14O2 +H2O
according to reaction
1 mole of CH3COOH require 1 mole of C5H12O
number of mole C5H12O is less than number of mole CH3COOH
so, C5H12O is limiting reagent
1 mole of C5H12O give 1 mole of C7H14O2
5.4 mole of C5H12O give 5.4 mole of C7H14O2
number of mole of C7H14O2 = 5.4
molar mass of C7H14O2 = 130 g/mol
mass of C7H14O2 produced = (number of mole C7H14O2)*(molar mass of C7H14O2)
= (5.4*130)
= 702 g

Answer : 702 g
B)
mass of isopentyl acetate is produced if the yield is 65.5% = {(65.5/100)*702} g
= 459.8 g

Answer : 459.8 g
