Mercury is a persistent and dispersive environmental contaminant found in many ecosystems around the world. When released as an industrial by-product, it often finds its way into aquatic systems where it can have deleterious effects on various avian and aquatic species. The accompanying data on blood mercury concentration (µg/g) for adult females near contaminated rivers in a state was read from a graph in an article.

SOLUTION:

From given data,

0.21 0.23 0.25 0.31 0.33 0.41 0.55 0.56 1.42 1.70 1.84 2.20 2.24 3.07 3.24

Determine the value of the 10% trimmed mean. (Round your answer to three decimal places.)

Calculation for the 10% trimmed mean ,

Trimmed mean :

A 10% trimmed mean can be calculated by eliminating the smallest 10% and largest 10% of the sample than find the average for the remaining samples.

10% of the smallest value is 0.21 and the 10% of largest value is 3.24 , eliminate the two values and find the average for the remaining values as follows:

= (0.23+0.25+0.31+0.33+0.41+0.55+0.56+1.42+1.70+1.84+2.20+2.24+3.07) / 13

=15.11 / 13

= 1.162307

10% of the smallest value is 0.23 and the 10% of largest value is 3.07 , eliminate the two values and find the average for the remaining values as follows:

= (0.25+0.31+0.33+0.41+0.55+0.56+1.42+1.70+1.84+2.20+2.24) / 11

=11.81 / 11

= 1.073636

The trimmed mean is ,

= (+) / 2

= (1.162307+1.073636) / 2

= (2.235943) / 2

= 1.118  (Round your answer to three decimal places)

Question 7 Acid rain is an environmental challenge in many places around the world. It refers to rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic, i.e. rainwater having elevated levels of hydrogen ions (low pH). The measure of pH is a measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution and has a scale ranging from 0 to 14. Distilled water, with carbon dioxide removed, has a neutral pH level of 7. Liquids with a pH less...

The game of roulette is popular in many casinos around the world. In Las Vegas, a typical roulette wheel has the numbers 1–36 in slots on the wheel. Half of these slots are red, and the other half are black. Feasts and banquets are an important part of many cultures around the world. For example, in Norse culture during the Viking era in Scandinavia, chiefs and other rulers would routinely throw lavish feasts for all of their vassals (people who owed them a duty of responsibility), including rivals and enemies. From a naive point of view, it seems strange to feast and give gifts to people who will likely use those gifts against you. (a) (10 points) Using the economic...

Many countries and experts around the world are arguing that current mixed economies and the economics that justifies them are no longer sustainable because they are built on predominantly fossil fuel use. Combined with the production/consumption processes that generate a great deal of highly destructive and biosphere-threatening waste, they are no longer effective. Over the next couple of decades, we must transition those economies to a new state where they run predominantly on renewable energy and operate in a circular...
