Sleep apnea is condition in which breathing is disrupted due to some causes while sleeping. This forces brain to regain consciousness or to force out from sleep to have normal breathing. The basic difference between central and obstructive sleep apnea in pediatric patients are:

Central apnea- Central apnea occurs due to miscommunication between brain and muscles controlling breathing organs. During sleep brain sometimes misses to inform or communicate with the organs controlling breathing. This relaxes these organs and obstruct breathing. In pediatric patients, this form of sleep apnea is commonly seen in normal children for a very brief period of their REM sleep. However, such sleep apnea more than 20s should be considered as serious.
Obstructive sleep apnea: Obstructive sleep apnea is more a mechanical fault. In this form of apnea, the organs as tongue and fatty tissues in the throat relaxes and obstruct the breathing. This type of sleep apnea is rare in normal children, as but is observed more in pediatric patients with muscles weaknesses and diseases associated with the breathing organs.
