A certain crystal is cut so that the rows of atoms on its surface are separated by a distance of 0.352 nm. A beam of electrons is accelerated through a potential difference of 175 V and is incident normally on the surface. If all possible diffraction orders could be observed, at what angles (relative to the incident beam) would the diffracted beams be found? (The surface acts as a diffraction grating where maxima occur when d sin? = n?, n = 1,2,3...)

Solutions

Expert Solution

wavelength of electron = 12.27/v Ao

                                = 0.9275 Ao

for diffraction        dsin = n

for n= 1             0.352*10-91 = 1*0.9275*10-10

                                            1 =sin-(0.2635) = 15o17'

for n=2                                  2 = sin-( 0.5269) = 31o48'

for n=3                                  3= sin-(0.7904) = 52o13'

The surface energy of a single crystal depends on crystallographic orientation. Does this surface energy increase or decrease with an increase in planar density? Why? (Hint: Read “External Surface” part in S.4.6: Surface energy is proportional to the number of unsatisfied bonds of surface atoms) please clear hand writing, also plesae don't give me the book answer. Thank you.

Cohesive energy of a crystal is the energetic cost that holds all atoms together in a crystal. It can be determined both experimentally and theoretically. Explain, based on your knowledge on the quantum mechanical nature of non–covalent interactions, why the following statement is incorrect: Because silicon crystal are bonded together by strong covalent bonds between silicon atoms, non– covalent interactions, in particular, dispersion interactions, play NO role in determining the cohesive energy in silicon crystals.

Masses coupled through springs is a model for the behavior of atoms in a crystal. Consider a one-dimensional crystal, what if we have a crystal made of two kinds of atoms with different masses? Consider a one-dimensional lattice made up of alternating large and small masses, M and m, respectively. Assume periodic boundary conditions. (a) Calculate the normal modes of this lattice (you should find two normal modes). (b) Describe the relative motion of the two types of masses for...

In your opinion, should the government cut its spending levels, and if so, what specific area should be cut first? Explain your reasoning. What could be the possible unintended consequences of such a cut? This discussion covers 3 skills. Describe government spending at federal, state, and local levels. Describe how federal deficits and the national debt relate to the economy. Describe how automatic stabilizers respond to economic events.
