In your opinion, should the government cut its spending levels, and if so, what specific area should be cut first? Explain your reasoning. What could be the possible unintended consequences of such a cut?
I would add Defense Spending. It is totally unacceptable and unwarranted that the US taxpayers foot a bill for a military that is the largest in the world and is larger than the next 19 combined! Plus there are infinite places in the military where cuts could be made without sacrificing any defensive capability.
The US has over 700 military bases all over the world, that is more than one for every single other country, that is unnessecary and overkill, plus that doesn’t even cover the scret bass that we aren’t allowed to know about. Many of those bases should be closed and their functions either eliminated or consolidate with other existing bases.
The US has 10 aircraft carriers in service, 1 in reserve and 2 under construction. India has the next largest number, 2 in service, 1 in reserve, and 1 under construction; Russia has 1 in service; China has 1 in service and 1 under construction. Aside from the US, the rest of the world combined have 10 carriers in service, 2 in reserve, and 5 under construction. We do not need this many carrier groups.
The Pentagon must submit to an audit, the amount of waste is staggering, and contractors are intentionally and unintentionally overcharging for untold services and products.
The there are the programs that our military don’t want and don’t need but are forced on them because they are pet projects of some member of congress or the lobbyists who control him.
