The Pew Internet and American Life Project reported in 2004 that “17% of current music down loaders say they are using paid services”. Consider a random sample of 400 music down loaders. Compute the probability that X equals the mean of X where X is the number of current music down loaders (You can use appropriate program). Find the mean of X. Find the probability?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution:

Given that,

p = 17% = 0.17

n = 400

Here, BIN (400 , 0.17)

Mean = E(X) = n * p = 400 * 0.17 = 68

we can use normal approximation to binomial to find P(X = 68)

According to normal approximation binomial,

X Normal

Mean = = n*p = 400 * 0.17 = 68

Standard deviation = =   =   = 7.5126559884

Now ,

P(X = Mean)

= P(X = 68)

= P[68 - 0.5 < X < 68 + 0.5]

= P[67.5 < X < 68.5]

= P(X < 68.5) - P(X < 67.5 )

=  P[(X - )/ <  (68.5- 68 )/7.5126559884] -   P[(X - )/ <  (67.5 - 68 )/7.5126559884]

= P[Z < 0.0666] - P[Z < -0.0666]

= 0.5265 - 0.4735 ..Use z table

= 0.0530

The Pew Internet and American Life Project reports that young people ages 12-17 send a mean of 60 text messages per day. A random sample of 40 young people showed a sample mean of 69 texts per day. Assume σ = 28 for the population. Using a significance level of α = 0.05, test whether the population mean number of text messages per day is greater than 60. i. What is the null hypothesis? ii. 15. As part of the Pew Internet and American Life Project, researchers surveyed a random sample of 800 teens and a separate random sample of 400 young adults. For the teens, 79% said that they own an iPod or MP3 player. For the young adults, this figure was 67%. Is there a significant difference between the population proportions? A survey of Internet users reported that 17% downloaded music onto their computers. The filing of lawsuits by the recording industry may be a reason why this percent has decreased from the estimate of 31% from a survey taken two years before. Suppose we are not exactly sure about the sizes of the samples. Perform the calculations for the significance tests and 95% confidence intervals under each of the following assumptions. A Pew Internet & American Life study found that teens and young adults consider their frequent e-communication as very different from the traditional writing they learn in school and generally don’t consider it “real writing.” Although they are tech-smart, students don’t always understand the boundaries of acceptable media use and need to learn that employers expect more formal, thoughtful, informative, and error-free messages on the job. How would you deal with this in the workplace?
