Describe the gland type underlying each tonsil.
Tonsils are of various types such as: Adenoid tonsil, Tubal tonsils, Palatine tonsils and Lingual tonsils. Each tonsils are covered by mucosa. The mucosa has got crypts. The tissues of tonsils are similar to lymph nodes.
Adenoid tonsil --- It is located in the roof of pharynx and is made up of ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium, it has small folds but no crypts. It is also known as pharyngeal or nasopharyngeal tonsil.
Tubal tonsils --- It is two in number. It is located in the roof of pharynx and is made up of ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium. It is also known as Gerlach tonsil.
Palatine tonsils --- It is two in number. It is located on the sides of oropharynx and is made up of non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium cells and it has crypts which are long and branched. They are seen as pink lumps on left and right side at the back of throat.
Lingual tonsils ---- It is located behind the terminal part of tongue and is made up of non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium cells and it has crypts which are long and unbranched.
