Solutions

Expert Solution

1. The nucleus stores the genetic information of the cell which is passed from one generation to the other.
2. Cytoplasm houses all the cell organelles and its associated processes.
All the processes and reactions necessary for the function of the cell take
place in the cytoplasm.
3. The cell membrane protects the cell from external barriers and selectively
permits certain substances into and out of the cell.
4. The cell wall provides strength and also renders shape and structure to a given
cell.
5. Central vacuole in plants stores the water and essential food substances
required by the cells of the plant.
6. Chloroplast contains the thylakoids which contain proteins necessary to perform photosynthesis.
7. Cytoplasmic streaming is the movement of substances/molecules across/within
the cell.
8. Cytoplasmic streaming occurs due to actin filaments connected to organelles.
This is useful because in order to transport various substances across the cell
cytoplasmic streaming is a must.
9. When the salt solution is added to elodea leaf, all the organelles aggregated in
the center of the cell. As the salt solution causes movement of water from cell to outside,
the cell shrinks.
10. The cells return to the original shape.

A. Discuss how nuclear import receptors such as importin function to carry proteins into the nucleus. Discuss: 1) how nuclear import receptors choose proteins for import: 2) the mechanism by which they get into the nucleus, including any other structures, molecules or molecular interactions involved; and 3) the mechanism by which nuclear proteins are released into the nucleus, as well as any important molecular interactions that are necessary for this process
