In unstable nuclei the strong nuclear forces do not generate enough binding energy to hold the nucleus together permanently. The unstable nuclei lie above or below stablity line in proton and neutron stablity line. When there are more number of protons in nucleus then there is more repulsive forces between these protons and binding energy per nucleon decreases. Hence nucleus become unstable or radoactive. Beta decay, alpha decay, gamma decay, electron capture, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion are different interactions in nucleus through which nucleus try to obtain stability.
