Outline the function of the following components of the nucleus.                /6 marks

a) nuclear basket

b) nucleoplasm

c) nuclear pore

d) nucleolus

e) nuclear lamina

f) nucleoporins

Solutions

Expert Solution

A) Nuclear basket- The nucleoplasmic filaments are organized in a basket-like structure that projects from the NPC towards the nuclear interior called “Nuclear Basket".It helps in transport and chromatin regulation.

B) Nucleoplasm- It is a type of suspension medium present inside the nucleus and enclosed by the nuclear membrane. It contains nucleolus and chromosome.

C) Nuclear pore- They are protein-based channels present on the nuclear envelope which allows the passage of molecules from the nucleus to the cytoplasm and vice versa.

D) Nucleolus- It helps in the formation of ribosomal subunit for protein and ribosomal RNA (rRna)

E) Nuclear Lamina- It is a dense network in the nucleus of the cell and made up of membrane-associated protein and intermediate filament. It provides mechanical support and regulates important cellular events.

F)Nucleoporins- They play important role in transport of mRNA from the nucleus to cytoplasm after transcription of DNA.

A. Discuss how nuclear import receptors such as importin function to carry proteins into the nucleus. Discuss: 1) how nuclear import receptors choose proteins for import: 2) the mechanism by which they get into the nucleus, including any other structures, molecules or molecular interactions involved; and 3) the mechanism by which nuclear proteins are released into the nucleus, as well as any important molecular interactions that are necessary for this process
