Ans:
- Balance Error Scoring System (BESS)
is an easily administered cost-effective objective assessment tool
used by clinicians for the evaluation of static postural stability
after concussion in many different situations or populations being
affected. The problem of such static postural stability
can arise from injuries or diseases affecting the vestibular system
and/or brain. The examples of such populations or situations
includes: Traumatic brain injury, sports related
concussion, stroke, parkinson's disease, multiple
sclerosis, blast exposue in military and in some vestibular
disorders.
- BESS test is well suited in above
situations or populations beacuse of:
(i) Normative
data
(ii) Content
validity
(iii) Minimally
clinically important difference
(iv) Test-retest
reliability
(v) Inter-rater or
intra-rater reliability
(vi) Criterion
validity (Predictive/ Concurrent)
(vii) Construct
validity (Convergent/ Discriminant)
