what is the density of a 50% (m/v) solution of glycerol
50% (m/v) solution of glycerol means, we have 50 g (mass) and 50 mL(volume) water.
mass of glycerol = 50 g
Mass of the water = 50 mL = 50 g (density of water = 1 g/mL)
Pure glycerol density = 1.26 g/mL
Therefore, the volume of 50 g of glycerol = 50 (g)/1.26 (g/mL) = 39.68 mL
The total volume of the solution = volume of Gycerol + Volume of
water
= 39.68 mL + 50 mL
= 89.68 mL
Therefore, 100 g of solution occupy total volume = 89.68 mL
How much is the mass of the 1 mL solution = ??
Density = (1mL x 100 g) /(89.68 mL) = 1.115 g/mL
Hence, the density of a 50% (m/v) solution of glycerol = 1.115 g/mL
