3. Frequency and wavelength are both in your equation for speed. Why is it that, when you changed the frequency, you did not change the speed of the wave?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Though we can calculate the speed of wave by knowing the frequency and wavelength of the wave ,But wave frequency does not affect wave speed. An increase in wave frequency cause a decrease in wavelength while the wave speed remains constant.the speed of a wave is not dependent upon properties of the wave itself. Rather, the speed of the wave is dependent upon the properties of the medium such as the tension of the rope.

Analogy

speed =distance/time

we can calculate the speed by knowing distance and time.but Changing the time or distance does not affect the speed i.e distance or time are not factors that changes the speed.

factors that can affect the speed are:-

How fit the person is,Track/road condition , weather etc

Similarly speed of wave is not changed by frequency or wavelength of the wave.

e.g. factors that will change the speed of a string wave could be

material of the string, tension ,medium surrounding the string.

We know that the frequency and wavelength of an oscillation are related by the velocity of the wave (recall from above that !=%&).
