A molecule with molecular weight of 180.18 g/mol is analyzed and found to contain 40.00% carbon, 6.72% hydrogen and 53.28% oxygen. What is the empirical and molecular formulas of the molecule? (C=12.01 g/mol, H=1.01 g/mol, and O= 16.00 g/mol)
I know the answer, but please explain how you get to it.....
mass of carbon = 40.00 g
moles of C = 40 / 12 = 3.33
moles of H = 6.72 / 1 = 6.72
moles of O = 53.28 / 16 = 3.33
the ratios of all
C H O
3.33 6.72 3.33
1 2 1
Emperical formula = CH2O
mass of emperical formula = 12 + 2 + 16 = 30
molecular mass = 180.18 g/mol
n = 180 / 30 = 6
Molecular formula = 6 x CH2O
Molecular formula = C6H12O6
