Do you think we can teach healthcare providers
empathy? Why or why not? If so, how? If not, what can providers do
to account for limited empathy skills?
Using empathy in a clinical setting helps put patients at ease and sets the foundation for a trusting and positive patient-doctor relationship. It can also aid doctors in honing in on a patient's specific concern, which can save time and frustration for everyone involved. Expressing empathy is highly effective and powerful, which builds patient trust, calms anxiety, and improves health outcomes. Research has shown empathy andcompassion to be associated with better adherence to medications, decreased malpractice cases, fewer mistakes, and increased patient satisfaction.Empathy, i.e., the ability to understand the personal experience of the patient without bonding with them, constitutes an important communication skill for a health professional, one that includes three dimensions: the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral.Empathy is important because it helps us understand how others are feeling so we can respond appropriately to the situation. It is typically associated with social behaviour and there is lots of research showing that greater empathy leads to more helping behaviour.Empathy is the ability to accurately put yourself "in someone else's shoes"– to understand the other's situation, perceptions and feelings from their point of view – and to be able to communicate that understanding back to the other person. Empathy is a criticalskill for you to have as a leader. Empathy is defined as the ability to understand the thoughts feelings or emotions of someone else. An example of empathy is feeling the same amount of excitment as a friend, when they tell you they're getting married.Imagine your beloved dog is dying. You try to keep her happy and comfortable for as long as possible, but a day comes when she is in too much pain to enjoy her life. You take her to the vet and have her put to sleep.
