Titanium (Ti) is a strong, lightweight metal that is used in the construction of rockets, jet engines, and bicycles. it can be prepard by reacting TiCl4 with Mg metal at very high temperatures. The products are Ti(s) and MgCl2.

a) provide a balanced chemical reaction for the reaction described above.

b) how many grams of Ti metal can be produced from a reaction involving 3.54 * 10^4 g of TiCl4 and 6.53*10^3 g of Mg?

Solutions

Expert Solution

TiCl4 + 2Mg -------> Ti + 2MgCl2

no of moles of TiCl4 = W/G.M.Wt

                                    = 35400/189.67 = 186.64 moles

no of moles of Mg       = W/G.A.Wt

                                     = 6530/24 = 272.08 moles

1 mole of TiCl4 react with 2 moles of Mg

186.64 moles of TiCl4 react with = 2*186.64/1 = 373.28 moles of Mg

Mg is limiting reagent

2 moles of Mg react with TiCl4 to gives 1 mole of Ti

272.08 moles of Mg react with TiCl4 to gives = 272.08/2 = 136.04 moles of Ti

mass of Ti = no of moles * gram atomic mass

                   = 136.04*48 = 6529.92g of Ti

Beryllium disease: Beryllium is an extremely lightweight metal that is used in many industries, such as aerospace and electronics. Long-term exposure to beryllium can cause people to become sensitized. Once an individual is sensitized, continued exposure can result in chronic beryllium disease, which involves scarring of the lungs. In a study of the effects of exposure to beryllium, workers were categorized by their duration of exposure (in years) and by their disease status (diseased, sensitized, or normal). The results were...

The combustion of titanium with oxygen produces titanium dioxide: Ti(s) + O2(g) → TiO2(s) When 0.515 g of titanium is combusted in a bomb calorimeter, the temperature of the calorimeter increases from 25.00°C to 47.00°C. In a separate experiment, the heat capacity of the calorimeter is measured to be 9.84 kJ/K. The metal titanium, which is useful in making alloys to resist high temperatures and extremely corrosive environments, adopts two crystal structures – close-packed hexagonal (α-phase) at room temperature and body-centred cubic (β-phase) above 882 °C. Under favourable circumstances, the α phase can dissolve up to 32 atomic % (nearly 15 wt %) of oxygen whereas the β phase can dissolve very little oxygen at the transition temperature (882 °C) and a little more at higher temperatures. Oxygen atoms have a...
