(Answer) Ethics are basically the guidelines that a civil and considerate individual would need to follow in order to be civil and considerate towards another individual.

However, there are times when this core meaning is lost in translation and interchanged with “personal values.” When this happens, personal ethical relativism and conscience are elements that drown in a pool of misunderstandings with the way society views us.

It is absolutely right to apply ethical behaviour when dealing with a community. However, when it comes to personal choices, it is the conscience that self-love that could be a priority. For instance, a middle-aged person named John advises a millennial named Paul to detox from social media for a while or else he would suffer from depression. However, Paul spends his time reading self-help blogs and pieces online that are actually helping him stay motivated during difficult times.

This is what ethical relativism really is. What may seem ethical and morally right to one person may be the opposite for another. Therefore, when it comes to personal preferences, it is better to make sure that it is not sieved through community ethics but rather through self-actualisation.
