The change in species composition in an area over time is called Ecological Succession.
It starts with colonization of an area by some species. The environment of the area is constantly changing. The species living in that area, during their lifetime interact with and bring numerous changes in their surrounding, such as soil properties. These changing environment can favour the appearance of newer species, which thus bring a change in the species composition of that area. An existing community can be completely removed from an area and then replaced by new species. These changes occur slowly and result in Ecological Succession.
