Answer the 2 questions below in regards to the material extrusion process , FDM (Fuse deposition modelling).

a. Detailed Explanation of how and why the following 3 variables affect the SURFACE FINISH of the product

1. Pressure/Force 2. Temperature 3. Time

b. Detailed Explanation of how and why the following 3 variables affect the DIMENSIONAL ACCURACY of the product

1. Pressure/Force 2. Temperature 3. Time

**you will likely need to consult online or literature sources to be able to explain the mechanisms that cause these accurately);

Expert Solution

a) Yes the force/pressure applied on the part will directly affect its surface finish. The parts are manufactured and machined by various machining process. During these process (FDM) various types of forces and pressure is applied on the parts. During the applicaiton of these forces the surface quality of the parts varies with respect the type of manufacturing process and the type of forces applied.

The surface finish also gets affected by varying the temperature. When the temperature is high, good surface finish can be observed in FDM process. whereas, at lower temperatures, the surface finish is not good. This is because when the temperature varies solidification of the materials also changes and it results in varying suface finish.

Time is one of the important criterial that get affected by suface finish. As the time goes on, due to the usage of the components, the suface quality of the product get affected.

b. The force applied on the part directy affects the dimensional accuracy. When higher forces are applied, the tolerance level of the dimension cannot be maintained closer. To maintain closer tolerance we need to apply the forces at very lower levels. The tolerance directly gives abou the dimensional accuracy of the object.

As the temperature varies, due to the shrinkage effect in the component, the dimensional accuracy of the parts varies. Shrinkage is a phenomenon that affects the diemsions of the components due to the change in temperature.

Yes, as time changes the dimensional accuracy of the component alos changes. Due to the usage of the part reguarly, the dimensions of the part chages due to the wear and tear that is created.
