Case: Toyota Motor Corporation is a Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer headquartered in Toyota, Aichi, Japan. Recently a conflict arises from the management styles of two managers, Ralph and George, who head two different departments in the same organization. Ralph’s problem with George is that the latter is taking staff from his department without his approval. On the other hand, George feels that he is doing the right thing by taking staff from Ralph’s over staffed department. The situation is compounded by the fact that most of the people who work under Ralph are asking to be transferred while Ralph feels that his department is not overstaffed. He feels that George is interfering with his duties while George is sure that Ralph would do well with a leaner workforce as his job is not as critical as George. The conflicting situation gets worse and personal at times damaging departmental repute as well as performance.

Expert Solution

a) As the HR head of Toyota, the most effective technique for solving the issue between the two managers would be to collect the employee data of each department and critically analyze the strength of the department with respect to the work involved. And then arrange a meeting between the two managers so as to hear the problems directly from them and resolve the matter sitting there with them.

b) The resolution of this conflict is vital or necessary because, the conflict between the managers are actually putting the employees in trouble as they are not allowed to work properly and this at the end would be affecting the productivity of the employees and thereby causing huge loss to the company.

c) The team leadership role that I would be taking here would be both of a strategist and a communicator as I would be setting the proper strategies to settle the issues between both the managers and also communicate the issue with them keeping a critically analyzed report.

d) The major powers of me as an HR would be as follows:

- Referent Power which stays on two pillars which is the personality and character. And there would be a presumed credibility for these professionals between the employees.

- Expert Power which majorly is the power to influence others with the knowledge they have.

- Executive Presence Power which means the power to support the fellow employees with their careers and resolve the issues faced. And they would be skillful communicators.

- Impact Power is the power to make an impact on the people that surround you.

And the power that I would use here as an HR would be the power to impact and executive presence power which would help me resolve the issue using my knowledge and communication skills.

e) In order to foster the moral virtues to change attitudes of the manager the base would be to have the correct combination of the below:

- Trustworthiness

- Responsibility

- Justice

- Respect for each other

- Care for the fellow employees.

In this scenario both Ralph and George should have communicated their problems properly with each other instead of putting the ego and burden on the junior employees. They should have shown the proper virtue of leadership showing the values to the fellow employees.
