information about the metal additive manufacturing process and defects and parameters

Solutions

Expert Solution

Additive manufacturing takes place by layer by layer processing.

In rapid prototyping techniques, initially a CAD file is transformed to a .stl file format. Then each layer us sliced into small units and by heating the metal powder manufacturing is done. This type of manufacturing is done for making ornaments.Near net shapes can be produced by this methods. Melting point, feed rate from hopper and thickness are the process parameters.

Selective laser melting is a technique where laser beam is used. If electrons at vaccum is used for additive manufacturing processes, it's known as electron beam melting.

The most common demerits include

Materials: The processing materials are still limited. Extensive use and research can lead to use of more bio medical materials.

The cost is high. As still research us going on and the process is sluggish, it's costly. So build rate is slow.

The surface finish is less when compared to other manufacturing processes.

Printing of one can only be done at aa time

Zero Defects & On-target: There are two manufacturing philosophies of manufacturing. Zero-defects is primarily practiced by American manufacturers and on-target is generally adopted by Japanese companies. Taking an example for an assembly, show how you will choose the target dimensions if you want to be close to the ideal by one SD, two SDs, and three SDs for both manufacturing philosophies. You may assume any adequate SD dimension. Example: Say the dimension and tolerance given to you is 100 mm...
