Explain how sound is actually a form of energy. In what medium do sound waves travel? 1-2 paragraphs

Solutions

Expert Solution

Sound is the movement of energy through substances in longitudinal(compression / rarefaction)waves.

In our atmosphere there are lots of air molecules while we make a noise or while we play a song the air molecule vibrates and releases a energy called sound.

Sound is considered as a form of energy because:

  • It obeys the first law of thermodynamics which states that energy can neither be created nor be destroyed but it changes from one form to another.
  • It is considered as a mechanical energy which has both potential as well as kinetic energy.
  • Sound is produced when a force causes an object or substance to vibrate- the energy is transferred through the substance in a wave.
  • Example:A vibrating drum in a disco transfers the sound energy to the room as sound. Kinetic energy from the moving air molecule transfers the sound energy to the dancers eardrums. Notice that kinetic energy(movement)energy in the sticks is being transferred into sound energy

Sound vibrations create sound waves which move through mediums such as air and water before reaching our ears.

A tuning fork generates sound waves with a frequency of 230 Hz. The waves travel in opposite directions along a hallway, are reflected by walls, and return.
