What are the synthesis methods for carbon nanotubes? What is the general growth mechanism for CNTs? List at least 2 potential applications for CNTs. What are the synthesis methods for silicon nanowires? List at least 2 potential applications for SiNWs.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Sizable quantities of carbon nanotubes are made by techniques which include arc discharge, laser ablation, high-pressure carbon monoxide disproportionation, and chemical vapor deposition (CVD)

Growth mechanism of nanotube is different depending on methods and mechanisms are vapor-solid-solid (VSS), vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism etc. In most of the methods metal particles are necessary for the growth of SWCNT. Explaining one of them we have vapor–liquid–solid method (VLS) mechanism it's used for growth of one-dimensional structures made by chemical vapor deposition. The growth of a crystal through direct adsorption of a gas phase on to a solid surface is generally very slow.

Applications of CNT involve -

CNT for cancer treatment

CNT for tissue regeneration

These are applications due to High Electrical Conductivity,Very High Tensile Strength,High Flexiblity, Elasticity, High Thermal Conductivity etc.

Synthesize silicon nanowires is done by methods involving -Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), Plasma Enhanced CVD (PECVD),Laser-Ablation,Evaporation.

Silicon nanotubes are widely used in the semiconductor industry it's because of their exceptional electromechanical properties. Silicon nanotubes behave like a metal fuel and contain hydrogen so used in electonics.
