Hey guys,
So I am doing a presentation on the element Gold, Au. Now I could go look up the information online but I am really running out of time here, could someone provide me with as much information as you can on the elemnt gold(NOTE NOT PLAGIARIZED). Please cite everything and just hook me up with as many paragraphs and information on gold as you can. I will downrate you if you just do a lazy copy paste from google so please be cautius. If this is too much then just ignore this question. BTW even if you can't write paragraphs about gold, try to atleast give me some ideas and questions about the element so that I can answer and finish this powerpoint. THANK YOU!
Gold
Symbol : Au
Atomic number = 79
Atomic Mass = 197
Belongs to d-group in periodic table (transition metal series)
Existance : Metallic form
Extraction when in ore : Cyanide process
Appearence : shiny and soft surface
Color : yellowish (various shades) due to transition of electron when absorption of light occurs from a d-orbital of metal to an s-orbital. While relaxing it gives off the absorbed energy in the form of light of yellow color wavelength.
Conductivity : Good conductor of electricity and heat due to ability of free movement of electrons in the crystal of postive and negative ions in place. They are considered better than many metals as gold is resistant to corrosion and lasts longer in the open atmosphere with air and moisture. So it remains non reactive towards air and moisture.
Standard reduction potential and activity : Gold is placed high in the activity series and thus acts as a very good oxidizing agent and itself gets easily reduced by any added metal species in solution. Common oxidixation states are +1 and +3 oxidation states. They are commonly referred to as aurous (when in +1 oxidation state) and auric (when in +3 oxidation state). Auric chloride is one common widely used gold compound.
Catalysis : Gold has been widely used as catalysts for the oxidation reaction. Both gas phase and liquid phase reactions have been studies in this case. Also a large number of literature exists on the synthesis of gold nanoparticles and its applications in various organic transformation including oxidation.
Electroplating : Gold has been used for electropating a cheaper metal such as copper or nickel. Gold plated items are used for manufacture of cutlerly, ornaments, etc.
Applications : Other applications include medical usage. Gold filling in dental is one of the very well known facts. Due to its soft nature, gold can easily be pressed into various forms and shiny nature makes it attractive for ornamental purposes.
