Radio frequency identification (RFID) is known as one of the three new technology solutions for supply chain management according to Mondragon, Lyons, Michaelides and Kehoe (2006). Critically discuss the concept of RFID and explain in your own understanding why old RFID technology can disrupt modern retail supply chains. [10]
Answer
RFID (radio frequency identification) Is the wireless networking device that uniquely recognizes an entity, animal or individual using an electromagnetic coupling in an electromagnetic spectrum component of the radiofrequency. RFID tags are distinct from bar code as they do not need to read the visible view and the data contained in these tags can be modified in real time.
RFID 's work:
There are three sections to each RFID system:
i. An antenna for scanning ii. An iv
receiver. To be converted
The RFID reader is a scanner and transceiver combination. It is
used to send signals that activate tags through frequency waves.
The waves are returned to the antenna once these tags are
triggered. In the tags is a transponder. Smart barcodes are RFID
tags that track products from the warehouse through to the sales of
the products in real time.
RFID technology is disrupting modern retail because:
i. This technology is costly, and the price of these tags may create a barrier in the modern supply chain.
ii. Retailers using the RFID technology are forcing the goods manufacturers to absorb the tagging costs. Many manufacturers of consumer products are failing to see any short-term gains of converting their program to RFID tags. And, the suppliers-manufacturers relationship becomes disrupted and eventually disrupts the supply chain.
iii. Standards are lacking on RFID technology. RFID products do not meet the quality standards required and can not be integrated into the supply chain with no added value.
