A majority of Americans and a strong majority of young Americans (those below 30) now support same-sex marriages. What are some cultural and structural changes that have led to this increase in support for marriage equality over the past decade?
One of the most important things that dominated the society in terms of sexual orientation was heterosexual relationship that was supported both by the culture and religions. Gender norms were defined by religions and cultures across the world and these norms also became laws. However, as the world progressed and countries moved away from the religions towards a more individualistic communities, they were able to redefine individual rights based on various issues such as race, religion, gender etc. The increased level of experience and exposure that people gained through globalization also helped people accept differences and support different practices. The LGBTQ rights were accepted by law as individual rights and people have started accepting them socially too. Thus, today many try to experiment their sexuality and value individual decision making on their own marriages.
