pcr and antibody antigen tests are used to detect covid19 , two cases for each test where you might get negative result for infected person, what are these cases?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Two cases for PCR testing for negative results for infected person

1.The sample collection from the nasal cavity is difficult some times and can't collect the enough genetic material of virus to detect in RT PCR or in early infection, viral genectic material will not be enough for reverse transcription and might give false negative result.

2. The false negative result may come from the poor processing of the swab material while extracting the RNA and converting into DNA in PCR .

Two cases for antibody-antigen testing for negative results for infected person

1. Due to slow immune response from the body, IgM doesn't appear high in the blood until 9 days and thus it doesn't get detected even if person is infected with virus.

2. IgG takes longer time to appear in blood comapre to IgM .If person's immune system is not strong enough to fight off the covid infection, then it might not appear in blood in testing. It genrally takes 11 days to appears in blood .it depends on person's own immune response. in this case also, it may give false negative for infected people.

Medical testing: enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test for presence of antigen or antibody EXPERIMENTAL PROTOCOL In this laboratory, you will test seven different patients using a direct ELISA. We have access to serum samples from the main characters of the TV show The Big Bang Theory. You will test each of them for the presence of ZIKA virus and HIV, as well as perform a pregnancy test, using known antigens/antibodies for those diseases/test. Students will work in pairs. Serum...

A t-test is used to compare the means of one variable for two groups of cases. As an example, a practical application would be to find out the effect of a new drug on blood pressure. Patients with high blood pressure are randomly assigned into two groups, a placebo group and a treatment group. The placebo group would receive conventional treatment while the treatment group would receive a new drug that is expected to lower blood pressure. After treatment for...

ELISA and nucleic acid tests (i.e. PCR) have been created to test for COVID-19. Many countries have had issues providing and managing tests for the virus. Given your understanding of the tests and the disease, state which test you would use to diagnose a possible COVID-19 infection and why you would choose this test over the other.
