He was a major philospher of ethics and is one of the founders of western philosophy. His writings are not available and arguments prevail that he in fact did not write his ideas himself. In fact, his piece of mind was delivered to us by his contemporaries and followers. Some ideas therefore seem mixed with that of Plato's due to the confusion as to who propagated whose beliefs. He believed in the immortality of the soul. In fact he was convinced that God had sent him as a messenger to pursuade people of Athens that their moral values are wrong headed. Instead of being overly concerned about their politics, careers and other individual choices, they should rather be concerned about the evolution of their souls. Also since many moralitics fathers were not able to produce such sons, he iterated that it was in fact not a culmination of parental nurture but divine bequest. He added that his wisdom was in fact limited to an awareness of his own ignorance. Unexamined life and a life that did not aim at understand the true essence of human life was worthless. These ideas and standards pushed many people (and still continue to do so) towards spirituality and soul search. Many philophers spoke on various themes, but his ideas were unique, bold and irreplaceable in very many ways. The way that the ideas make life worth living is the assurance and souls do continue to live and are eternal. The theme of death and the fear it brings with it, is re-assured in many ways through this belief system & tends to healing as well. Death can be one of the very significant factors that leads to trauma and grief in lives of the left behind loved ones. This assurance that they are eternal and do not cease to exist challenges the finality that death is associated with as a theme.
