A 150 lb, 5’6” 20 something year old male burns approximately 1650 calories for his BMR and an additional 1078 calories from physical activity and the thermic effect of food. He decides to eat nothing but hamburgers for a day.
One hamburger has 8g of fat, 30g of carbs and 14g of protein.
Calculate the total calories burned in the day for this man ____________________________________
Calculate the total calories in one hamburger _______________________________
How many hamburgers will the man need to eat to maintain his body weight. ______________________
If he ate one extra hamburger a day, how many days would it take for him to gain 1 lb?
1. Calculate the total calories burnt in the day for this man?
Calories burned due to BMR = 1650 calories. {given in question}
Calories burned due to thermal effects and physical activities =1078 calories. {given in question}
Total calories burnt in the day = 1650 +1078 =2728 calories.
2. Calculate the total calories in one hamburger?
One hamburger contains 8g of fat, 30 g of carbohydrate, and 14 g of protein. {given in question}
1 g fat = 9 calories {fact}
hamburger contain 8g fat, so calories by fat = 8x9 = 72 calories
1g carbohydrate =4 calories {fact}
Hamburger contains 30 g carbohydrate, so calories by carbohydrates =30x4 =120 calories
1g protein = 4 calories {fact}
Hamburger contains 14 g protein, so calories by protein =14 x4 =56 calories
Therefore total calories in 1 hamburger =72 +120 +56 =248 calories.
3. How many hamburgers will the man need to eat to maintain his body weight?
To maintain the present body weight he has to consume the calories equivalent to total calories burnt in the day.
So total calories burnt in a day =2728 calories ( answer from question 1)
Calories in 1 hamburger = 248 calories (answer from question 2)
So total hamburgers in a day required to maintain the present body weight =2728 /248 = 11 hamburgers.
4. If he ate one extra hamburger a day, how many days would it take for him to gain 1 lb?
1 lb =3500calories approximately { fact}
1 hamburger has 248 calories, if he ate one extra hamburger. Then total extra calories for a day will be 248 calories.
So total days required to attain 3500 extra calories = 3500/248 =14.11 days so approximately 14 days.
