1. Following each afferent pathways that begin with gustatory receptors, nociceptors, auditory hair cells, and retinal cones, what area of the brain immediately precedes primary cortex? Specify the area for each of these sensory systems.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. Gustatory receptors

  • The gustatory cortex is in the ipsilateral post central gyrus.

2. Nociceptors

  • The primary olfactory cortex is the periamygdaloid area , piriform cortex and the prepiriform area of the cerebral cortex.
  • The secondary olfactory cortex is Brodmann's area 28 which is the entorhinal area.

3. Auditory hair cells

  • The primary auditory cortex is Brodmann's area 41 in the superior temporal gyrus.
  • The primary auditory cortex projects to Brodmann's area 42 or auditory association area .
  • Some fibres reach Wernicke's area - area 22 for interpretation of sound and comprehension of spoken language.
  • Some fibres reach areas 21 , 20 for interpretation and integration of auditory impulses.
  • Some fibres reach area 8 . This is for turning the gaze towards the origin of sound.

4. Retinal cones

  • Primary visual area is Brodmann's area 17.
  • Visual association area - Brodmann's area 18 , 19 . This is responsible for recognition of objects and perception of colour.
  • Area 19 projects some fibres to area 8 , which is concerned with eye movements.
