What are the main causes of the loss of biological diversity nowadays?
Biological diversity describes the variety of living organisms on the planet earth. It includes microorganism, plants, animals, coral reefs, forests, deserts, etc. The earth’s biodiversity is in danger. Habitat destruction is one of the major causes for biodiversity loss. Habitat loss includes deforestation and overpopulation. It is a big problem for physically large species and those living in forests or oceans.
Even a small element of an ecosystem breaks down disturbs the whole system. Fresh water ecosystems are most threatened. Human activities have been the major cause for encouraging invasive species. Species are also threatened by uncontrolled hybridization. Species are interbreed which causes swamping of the gene pool for fishing, over hunting, excessive logging and illegal trade of wildlife. Over 25% of global fisheries are being overfished which results in biodiversity loss. Global warming is a major cause for loss of biodiversity. Due to this, coral reefs which are will disappear in 20-40 years.
