There are many meteorological (natural) events affecting the
behavior of air pollutants. Describe two conditions that produce or
enhance air pollution events. Please cite specific instances.
There are also conditions which help to disperse air pollutants.
Describe two of these conditions and how they affect the
environmental fate of chemicals. Essay form
Please
Behaviour of air pollutant is is influenced with the air movement, so any kind of study of air pollution, it is mandatory to have an estimated study of local weather patterns (meteorology). Meteorological conditions are like Acid rain, Air mass, Anticyclone, Arctic cyclone, Ball lightning, Clouds, etc. For example is the air movement is slow and there is calmness in weather, the the air pollutant tends to build up at certain area and increases the air pollution, while on the other hand a quick, turbulent and strong wind movement leads to the rapid dispersal of the air pollutants due to which there is lesser accumulation of air pollutants and hence results into lower pollutant concentration.
The study of such events that is meteorology, it will be helpful to identify the source of pollution, concentration of the pollutants and the presiction of the air quality computationally. To understand the pollutants available in air, or to check the quality of the air, it is must to have understanding about the changes occuring in the environment as a chemical reaction occured by the effect of acid rain, solar radiation, humidity, temperature etc.
two of the major meteorological events affecting air pollution are as follows:
a. Wind speed and direction: drift and diffusion of the air pollutants are governed by the direction and the velocity of the wind. The speed of wind is directly proportional to the dispersal of the air pollutant. Due to high speed wind rapidly air pollutants get diluted with the greater volume of air.
b. Rainfall: It decreases the concentration of the air pollutants from atmosphere as they gets sttled at ground along with the water and hence cleanse the air. However it accelerates the accumulation of the particulate matters on the earth and can be severely injurious to soil. Acid rain is one of such incidence leading to the deposition of air pollutants on ground due to which many monuments are getting corroded like tajmahal.
Conditions helpful in dispersal of the air pollution.
A highly turbulent wind will lead to the rapid dispersal of the air pollution, this is why the cyclonic areas are quite better in their air quality as compared to the stable wind area. Similarly the solar radiation also affect the air quality, as formation of photochemical smog is on of the feature of sunlight that lead to the dispersal of air pollutant in a wider area and leading to the decease in the concentartion of air pollutants from particular area.
