Stephanie explains the two worlds that everyone come across, one the Personal world where we are very real and open with our loved ones and the second one is Professional world where we are expected to behave and exhibit. This shifting world makes one to put on a mask at work place. Certain emotions are not allowed at workplace thus forcing us to act and suppress our emotions. Organizations expect their employees to be detached from emotions and exhibit only pleasant emotions in order to contribute well in order to benefit the organization. She says that the challenge is to be oneself at the same time satisfy all the expected criteria of one’s company in terms of emotions.
She explains the psychopath behaviors saying that they would go to any extend in using themselves and others in the pursuit of their goals. They are emotionally detached and goal oriented but only focusing on achieving the targets or goals. She says that most humans have neurons that mirror the emotions of other people, so we understand others. She compares our emotions to a dragon but if we kill the dragon we will lose our humanness.
She explains her experience with managers during her training sessions saying that people don’t have any vocabulary to explain it to someone and emotions are seen as weaknesses in the office. It’s about not only becoming aware of one’s emotions but also about using it properly. She says that anger is seen as a negative emotion but when it is used in speeches to motivate people, it has a powerful impact. Conflicts can be solved by understanding the other one’s emotions and putting one in the other’s shoes. Entrepreneurs, she says are connecting with people through their products thus helping them solve their problems and this come out of understanding the customers.
At the end, she urges her audiences to be more realistic rather than very automatic like machines by opening up more and talk to their colleagues rather than just stopping with yes or no conversations.
