Calculate [H30] for the following solutions. a) 6.16 x 10 ^-3 M HBr b) 1.80 x 10^-2 M KOH

Solutions

Expert Solution

(a) Given concentration of HBr = 6.16x10-3 M

    HBr+ H2O H3O+ + Br-

1 mole of HBr produces 1 mole of H3O+

So [H3O+] = [HBr] = 6.16x10-3 M

(b) Given concentration of KOH = 1.80x10-2M

KOH K+ + OH-

1 mole of KOH produces 1 mole of OH-

So [OH-] = [KOH] = 1.80x10-2M

We know that [H3O+][OH-] = 1.0x10-14 M

                               [H3O+] = (1.0x10-14 ) / [OH-]

                                         = (1.0x10-14 ) / (1.80x10-2)

                                         = 5.55x10-13 M
