(Answer) One of the branches of the East Germanic tribe was known as the “Goths” or the “Visgoths.” This was the tribe that attacked the Roman Empire under the leadership of Alaric in the year 410 AD. This was one of the first attacks in 800 years that the Romans lost. It was a major dent in the majestic Empire. St. Jerome was one to say that, “The city which had taken the whole world is taken itself.”
This event formed a landmark that led to the eventual conclusion of the Roman Empire. After this, Rome faced a series of attacks from the Barbarians, the Huns and others. Finally, the empire that was once the strongest in the world, was not weakened through constant attrition. Odoacer's army finally chased out the last emperor. On the 4th of September, 476 AD, Rome finally and completely fell.
