Draw and label a nephron and explain where filtration, reabsorption and secretion occur and what molecules are filtered, reabsorbed and secreted where on the nephron. Please draw this on paper and turn it in.

Expert Solution

Filteration:

It is carried out in the glomerulus and therefore called glomerular filtration.

Molecules filtered- all the constituents of plasma are filtered except the blood cells and proteins. Therefore it is called ultrafiltration.

Reabsorption:

It takes place mainly in the proximal convoluted tubule. But few substances are also reabsorbed in the distal convoluted tubule.

Substances reabsorbed- glucose, amino acids, sodium ( these are reabsorbed actively) whereas nitrogenous wastes are reabsorbed by passive transport. Also bicarbonate ions are reabsorbed.Water is reabsorbed along with electrolytes.

Large amounts of water is reabsorbed from collecting duct.

Secretion:

It takes place in PCT as well as DCT.

Substances secreted- hydrogen ions, potassium ions and ammonia.
