What are the organizational consequences of the use of information technology
Use of information technology is a common practice in organizations and it comes with a lot of benefits making the working easier, systemized and quick for the organization. But along with many positive impacts that the use if information technology brings to the organization there are few negative ones too. The organizational consequences of the use of information technology are as follows:
- increase in unemployment and job insecurities- with the use of technology more work is executed through computers and mechanics hence manpower requirement has reduced resulting in increase in unemployment and job insecurities. The use of technology is taking over the importance of work being done manually and hence organizations dont require more human resurces for accomplishing certain jobs unlike the traditional times when computers were not in use.
- data security issues- depending on information technolgy to store all data and information of the organization makes it lose its privacy and security. Any data can be accessible to anyone by easy means or even through illegal means like online hacking.
- storage and backup issues- using technology makes storing huge amount of data very easy but at the same time relying on its storage and not having proper storing systems and backup systems can result in losing the data all at once or searching for an old stored file can become a tedious job.
- more implementation cost- usage of information technology requires installation of upgraded hardware and software systems and updation of the same from time to time. This is a costly affair which cannot be avoided if all the operations of the organization depend on such systems. Even the traning of employees to use the systems efficiently is time taking and costly.
- resistance from old employees- the employees using traditional ways of working by manual means may not be ready to accept the use of technology for getting all their work done. This resistance to change will make it difficult to implement the systems equally among all and will create complications and chaos in the work environment with diverse culture between the older staff working with traditional ways and young employees depending on technology for their work to be done.
