The electron configuration of a neutral atom is 1s^22s^22p^63s^2. Write a complete set of quantum numbers for each of the electrons. Name the element.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer : Here the electronic configuration of neutral atom is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 means total number of electrons would be the summation of all the powers[ means maximum number of electrons in orbital] is equal to = 12 electrons

Hence atomic number = 12 means it is a Mg

Hence the element is Magnesium .

Now the set of quantum numbers :

Here the last electron is entered into 3s2 means the principal quantum number is (n) = 3

and azimuthal quantum number (l) for s orbital is = 0

Magnetic quantum number = -l to + l = 0

and last spin quantum number is = +1/2 or - 1/2
