Endosymbiotic theory is a theory proposed to explain the origin
of semi-autonomous cell organelles- mitochondria and chloroplast
about 1.5bya.
An early prokaryotic cell engulfed anaerobic proteobacteia
which could break down energy. Slowly this proteobacteia became
mitochondria and is present in both plant and animal cells.
Next, some of these cells , engulfed another bacteria which
could perform photosynthesis. Later, this bacteria became plastids
(chloroplast) . It is found only in plant cells.
Evidence in support of theory: (i)cells cannot regenerate
mitochondria/plastid if these organelles are removed from cell.,
(ii) mitochondria and plastid have their own genome and translation
machinery (like single cells do )., (iii) mitochondria &plastid
have circular genomes with similarities to bacterial genomes, (iv)
New mitochondria and plastid are formed by the same mode as used by
bacteria to divide, binary fission.
Evidence against the theory: (i) mode of replication is
different for bacterial DNA and that of mitochondria or plastid,
(ii) structure of outer membrane of bacteria and
mitochondria/plastid is not same., (iii) absence of organism with
intermediate properties which could form a link between simple
eukaryotic cell and a modern eukaryotic cell containing
mitochondria/plastid.
What evidence supports the theory of endosymbiosis?
Does diffusion happen faster in a membrane rich in saturated or
unsaturated fatty acids? Why?
Diffusion may occur via simple movement across the membrane or
via carrier proteins. Furthermore, various types of carrier
proteins may be involved. Why the need for more than one
mechanism?
3a. Describe how genetic evidence using phylogenetic trees
supports the endosymbiosis theory that
mitochondria and chloroplasts evolved from bacteria.
3b. It has been observed that certain antibiotics that inhibit the
bacterial ribosome can also adversely affect
mitochondrial activity. How would you explain this observation.
Answer both questions thoroughly and
completely
What is primary endosymbiosis? What evidence is there for this? What is secondary endosymbiosis? What kind of organisms are involved? What is the evidence for this theory?
Describe at least one piece of evidence that supports the theory
of evolution. Alternatively, you can describe one misconception or
criticism of evolution as long as you also provide a counter to
that criticism.
Discuss surgical site infection and how Evidence Based Medicine
supports improving this indicator.
Discuss how this is currently marketed to the consumer (you can
define consumer as the patient, provider, insurance provider).
Be specific regarding effective communication and aspects of
marketing as it relates to health care delivery.
